PUMAS Examples
Search for the PUMAS Examples You Want
Currently the PUMAS collection contains 70 examples.
To select from an alphabetical list of PUMAS Example titles,
The PUMAS examples are aimed primarily at helping pre-college
teachers enrich their presentation of topics in math and
science.
- You may find a number of examples that
relate to your area of interest, perhaps written in different
styles, and possibly taking different approaches to the
material. There may also be comments/lesson plans filed with some of the
examples, written by previous users.
- Use these examples as a resource --
Select, adapt, recontextualize, and present the material to your
students in a way that you judge will best meet your students' needs,
abilities, and interests.
- You may have ideas related to a particular example that
might be helpful to subsequent users. There is an
opportunity, on the "Display an Example" page associated with
that example, for you to submit your comments/lesson plans.
- PUMAS examples are citable references. If you use
material from PUMAS examples in other work, please cite them
appropriately, e.g.: Chambers, L.H., "How Now, Pythagoras?", 07_10_98_1,

Searching the PUMAS Collection
There are three ways to search for examples
from the PUMAS collection. Each example begins with a
"header", which contains the Title, Author, Grade
Level of Example, etc. All the search methods use
these "header information fields".
- Sort by Header Field --
lists all the examples, in the alphabetical (or
numerical) order of the header field you select.
This is a good way to start, or to find
examples added after a certain date.
- Search for Header Content
-- lists those examples whose headers contain the
word(s) and/or number(s) you specify. This is
good way to locate a specific title, or find
work by a particular author.
- Search by
Multiple Criteria -- lists those examples
that have specific values for up to 3 header fields.
This is a good way to locate all examples for a
specific grade level, on a particular topic.
Other things you might want to do here:
1. Sort by Header Field
This is a good way to start, or to find
examples added after a certain date.
Click on the Header Field Name itself to get a list of
all the PUMAS examples, arranged in alphabetical (or numerical)
order of the header field selected.
For the definition of a Header Field, click on
the adjacent book icon. [If you are sorting by Curriculum Benchmarks, you will need to get the Benchmark Labels for the Benchmarks of interest.]
All Grades (1)
Author (38)
Author's Institution (31)
Curriculum Benchmarks (230)
Date Accepted (62)
Document Id (70)
Grade Level Of Example (8)
Level Of Difficulty (5)
Subject Keywords (328)

2. Search for Header Content
This is good way to locate a specific title, or to find
work by a particular author.
Enter one or more words or numbers in the Search box.
You will receive a list of PUMAS examples whose headers
contain those entries.
- A list of the Header Fields and their
definitions is given in the
Sort By Header Field section.
- You may string together multiple entries
using the words "AND", or "OR".
- You can use "*" as a 'wild card.' For example,
to see all examples submitted, revised,
or accepted in February 1997, regardless of day,
enter "1997-02*". For all examples processed in 1996,
enter "1996*".
- Note: Entering "Jet" will produce a list that
includes all the examples with Subject
Keyword "jet", as well as the examples with the
word "jet" in the title, or written by authors
from the "Jet Propulsion Laboratory".
